From Brian Greene

I know that Jon Lien will be remembered for his work with whales trapped in fishing gear, but I will remember most his love for the wild places of Newfoundland and his commitment to the protection of some representative samples of those wild places. I first met Jon in 1987, when public hearings were being held for the proposal to create a wilderness reserve in the Bay du Nord area. Jon was a strong supporter of the proposed reserve, and an unfailing source of inspiration and encouragement to those working toward its establishment. In later years he worked hard to support the development of a scientifically-based plan for a system of areas that would protect representative examples of Newfoundland’s varied ecosystems, both onshore and offshore. He was an eloquent, forceful and reasoned voice for conservation here; he will be greatly missed.

Thanks, Jon
