From Ted Rowe
To Judy and family,
I was saddened at the news of Jon’s death this week. Our paths have not crossed in recent years but I well remember the relationship I had with Jon as a colleague at Memorial in the 1970s. He was certainly one of a kind and I’ve always been in awe of his dedication and commitment to his life’s work in Newfoundland. He changed the course of events for us here.
A little sidebar – I was part of a small committee that included Jon, Steve Herder and Bill Power, the outdoors reporter at the Telegram in the early 1980s that was put together to honor the memory of my business partner Ray Simmons, also an outdoors enthusiast and columnist. The fact that Jon took the time to get involved in that small project has always impressed me, and underscores how deep a commitment he had not only to the natural environment but to the people involved in it as well.
He is part of the history and fabric of Newfoundland and Labrador and his memory will live for a long time to come.
With fondest thoughts,
Ted Rowe
