Jack Harris mourns loss of Dr. Jon Lien

St. John’s: Member of Parliament Jack Harris (St. John’s East) says he was saddened by the death this week of renowned scientist and University Professor, Dr. Jon Lien.

“Dr. Lien made a tremendous contribution to Memorial University and the Province, as well as to the world of Marine Biology and Animal Behaviour,” said Harris. “I was one of his students when he first came to Memorial and was struck by his generous and open spirit and interest in the world around him.”

Although most well known for his work with whales, and with fishermen to help save them and free them from traps and other fishing gear, Dr. Lien was also a well loved teacher and professor at Memorial for over thirty years.

“He inspired generations of students with a love of learning and interest in natural sciences and animal behaviour as well as a desire to engage in a positive way with the natural environment,” said Harris. “He will not be forgotten by those who knew and worked with him.”
