Whale bycatch reduction (from Geoff McPherson)
Thank you Jon for introducing us to bycatch reduction of whales and dolphins in nets from 1991.
Your work on the association between acoustic devices and the nets to which they were attached to were legendary. Your enthusiasm and continual visits with our fishermen and my family will live on in the acoustic alarms named after you.
You developed the potential for a positive relationship to develop between marine mammals and acoustic devices that has developed over time.
Your compassion for the marine scientists who gave you such an awful time because you dared to champion the efforts of fishing communities to reduce bycatch should be an inspiration to all from both sides of the marine mammal-fishery divide.
We will miss you Jon.
